Working with the Swiss

Overview

Our briefings are designed for employees working with the Swiss.  Swiss society is tri-cultural and tri-lingual - French, Italian and German.  Although there is a common Swiss culture, there are elements of French, Italian and German culture that can be detected in social and business etiquette.  The specific situation, the region and the individuals with whom you are dealing will define the variations in customs and etiquette.

Objectives

• Learn about the origins of the Swiss confederation, the role of the cantons and communes, Switzerland’s prized long-standing independence and neutrality, relationship with the EU, etc.
• Become aware of the conservative and highly regulated Swiss business environment, the importance of avoiding conflict and reaching consensual decision-making, the general reluctance to take ‘risks’ without meticulous planning and the Swiss reliance on evidence and facts for decision-making.
• Understand how to ‘break the ice’ in a country where relationships are slow to develop and are only the result of satisfactory business dealings.  How and when to adapt your business behaviour to create a positive impression and avoid giving unintentional offence.
• Learn how to work with the Swiss preference for clarity and efficiency, with detailed meeting agendas and action plans.
• Gain an appreciation of the Swiss attitudes to time, punctuality and deadlines.
• Learn lots of practical tips to assist you in your next encounter with your Swiss partners.

Additional topics for expatriates may include developing future personal and organisational strategies for adapting to the new environment, the four stages of culture shock and advice on coping for the family.
