Why We Start Every Language Journey with a Needs Assessment

The Importance of a Needs Assessment for Language Learning

No two language learners are the same. Everyone comes to the language learning process with different experiences, current levels, goals and expectations, which is why for every course we run, we always start with a comprehensive needs assessment. This step ensures that each participant receives the most effective, relevant and personalised training possible.

What Is a Needs Assessment?

A needs assessment is a short survey and conversation we have with every new learner before training begins. It helps us gather practical details, such as availability, preferred learning style and previous language study, but also some deeper insights into why the learner needs language skills and how they will use them in their work and daily life.

The Types of Questions We Ask

Our needs assessment form covers a wide range of topics, such as:

  • Background details: Current level of ability, other languages spoken and past learning experiences.
  • Learning goals: From professional needs like writing reports, negotiating, running meetings and giving presentations to personal objectives such as making travel arrangements or socialising.
  • Practicalities: Availability for lessons across the week, preferred delivery method and any adjustments required to make learning more accessible.
  • Workplace relevance: Industry-specific vocabulary, the type of documents learners read or write, and situations where language skills are most needed.

This information provides us with a full picture of the learner’s context so we can tailor training to be both practical and motivating.

Babel Group Language Course Needs Assessment

Matching Learners for Group Training

When learners join training as part of a group, the needs assessment becomes even more important. By understanding each participant’s level and goals, we can:

This creates an engaging, supportive environment where participants progress together.

Babel Group Language Learning Level Test

The Level Test

Another big part of our needs assessment process is to assess every new learner with a level test. This assessment allows us to align learners with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the international standard for describing language ability, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (near-native). Identifying the right CEFR level helps tutors prepare the training course, set realistic goals, track progress clearly and measure outcomes against a widely recognised standard.

Typically, learners will complete a short online written test, focusing on areas like grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing, followed by a short meeting with one of our tutors to assess their speaking and listening skills. The learner’s performance across both parts of the level assessment is used to determine where the learner currently is on the CEFR.

Why a Needs Assessment Matters

Ultimately, the needs assessment is both an administrative form and the foundation of successful learning. It ensures:

At Babel, our goal is to make every language learning experience purposeful, relevant and impactful. By starting with a clear understanding of needs, we give learners the best chance to succeed, whether they’re aiming to boost career opportunities, improve workplace communication or build confidence in global settings.

"The Skype lessons are interesting – they are definitely more difficult as they aren’t in person, but this is good practice for speaking on the phone and additionally it makes my face to face lessons in the office easier. "
