Our client, a leading Scotch whisky and spirits brand, entered a joint venture to bottle, market, and distribute their premium products in the dynamic Indian market. With their Scottish HQ and MEA (Middle East and Africa) regional leaders working closely with Indian colleagues, they recognised the importance of building strong, collaborative cross-cultural relationships to ensure smooth and effective operations.
Initially, Babel was commissioned to deliver cultural training for senior leaders based in the UK and MEA to strengthen collaboration and team cohesion with their Indian counterparts.
The client’s leadership teams were encountering cultural differences that impacted communication, expectations around leadership and accountability, and styles of collaboration. Our aim was to provide practical strategies to navigate these differences and improve remote working relationships with Indian colleagues.
To tailor the programme effectively, we conducted a confidential needs survey with participants. This helped surface their real-world challenges and informed a programme focused on understanding different cultural values and improving communication, teamwork and trust.
The training consisted of two 3-hour modules for UK and MEA leaders, covering:
Recognising that collaboration is a two-way effort, we also developed a bespoke programme for the Indian team. An additional module focused on soft skills needed for effective collaboration with UK and MEA colleagues, including:
Participants engaged in breakout discussions to create practical, easy-to-implement changes in their daily working practices.
The programmes were very well received across both cohorts. 92% of participants rated their experience as ‘excellent’ and 8% as ‘very good’. Feedback highlighted how insightful and practical the sessions were in helping participants navigate multicultural working environments. One participant noted: “Very insightful and interactive and extremely useful in navigating a company with multiple nationalities and backgrounds.”
This training helped the client build stronger cross-regional collaboration, enhanced cultural understanding, and aligned with their leadership development standards—laying a strong foundation for long-term success in the Indian market.
"I know quite a few people were sceptical about the value of spending a full day doing the training but from the feedback I have had it really fulfilled our needs."

"The Skype lessons are interesting – they are definitely more difficult as they aren’t in person, but this is good practice for speaking on the phone and additionally it makes my face to face lessons in the office easier. "
