We partnered with a global provider of food services and facilities management to deliver a tailored English language training programme for frontline employees working across a variety of operational roles. The staff included housekeepers, cleaners, catering staff and chefs, many of whom used English as an additional language in their day-to-day responsibilities.
As a large organisation with diverse teams and multilingual employees, the client recognised the importance of strengthening workplace communication by providing tailored language training in order to build employee confidence, improve collaboration and enhance service delivery across all of its sites.
Many employees on the programme had a basic level of spoken English but lacked the confidence and fluency needed to communicate effectively in fast-paced workplace environments. Employees needed support with understanding instructions, interacting with colleagues and supervisors, responding to requests and using practical workplace English more confidently in real-life situations, for example understanding clear communication linked to safety with regards to COSHH regulations to avoid accidents.
The client wanted a training solution that would be practical and flexible enough to fit around operational schedules while also creating a supportive learning environment where employees felt comfortable developing their language skills.
Our programme focused on helping learners build confidence in spoken communication, improve listening comprehension, strengthen pronunciation and expand the practical vocabulary needed for everyday workplace interactions. We also incorporated cultural awareness and communication skills to support collaboration within diverse teams.
In order to encourage interaction and peer learning, we delivered the programme through small online group classes of up to four learners. This format allowed participants to practise speaking regularly in a supportive environment while learning from colleagues facing similar workplace communication challenges. Groups were kept small in order to maximise learner speaking time during lessons.
The training was highly practical and tailored to the learners’ roles, focusing on realistic workplace scenarios and language that could immediately be applied in their day-to-day responsibilities.
The programme was delivered through live online sessions, allowing employees from different locations or on different shift patterns to attend training conveniently around their work commitments. Each group participated in one 60-minute lesson per week over a 24-week programme, creating consistent opportunities for gradual language development without disrupting operational responsibilities.
To reinforce learning between sessions, learners were also encouraged to complete guided self-study and practice activities designed to strengthen vocabulary retention and communication confidence.
Before the programme began, learners completed an initial assessment to identify their current level and communication needs, and this allowed us to group learners appropriately and tailor lesson content to their specific workplace situations and learning goals.
Throughout the programme, regular feedback and progress monitoring ensured that learners continued developing their skills and gaining confidence in using English more independently in the workplace.
The programme has helped the employees become more confident communicating in English during everyday workplace interactions, enabling them to engage more effectively with colleagues, supervisors and customers. Moreover, learners have reported feeling much more confident when asking questions, understanding instructions and participating in workplace conversations.
The client has benefited from improved communication across teams and a training solution that supports both employee development and workplace inclusion. By providing employees with practical language skills tailored to their roles, the programme has contributed to a more confident, collaborative and effective working environment.
